The station opened in 1933 and served as a key stop at Ueno Park until it closed officially in 2004 and was designated a historical building by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government last April. It was refurbished as part of the improvements being made in and around Ueno Park in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
