\nChinese telecom equipment giant Huawei\u2019s deputy chairwoman Sabrina Meng Wanzhou was detained by Canadian authorities last Saturday at the request of the US government.
\u201cWanzhou Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1,\u201d Ian McLeod, a Canadian Justice Department spokesman said in an emailed reply to questions. \u201cShe is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday [December 7].\u201d
\u201cAs there is a publication ban in effect, we cannot provide any further detail at this time. The ban was sought by Ms. Meng,\u201d McLeod said.
Meng was tipped by some mainland China media as a leading contender to succeed her father, Huawei\u2019s founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei to take the helm of the telecom giant. Meng adopted her mother\u2019s surname.
Huawei\u2019s head office was not immediately available for comment by late Wednesday, and its North America spokesman declined to comment on reports of Meng\u2019s detention when contacted earlier on Wednesday.
According to Meng\u2019s biography in the company\u2019s annual report, she joined Huawei in 1993 and held various positions in the company\u2019s finance departments. She is currently one of the board of directors\u2019 deputy chairpersons and the company\u2019s chief financial officer.<\/p>\n
