While streaming music sites like Spotify and Apple Music continue to sign up new listeners and rack up billions upon billions of streams every day, millions of people all around the world continue to head to YouTube to hear their favorite smashes. Now, as 2018 approaches its end point, the company has shared insight into which videos collected the most plays this year, and to those who don\u2019t understand the demographics of who listens to the most music on the site, the list might be somewhat surprising.
This year, Spanish-speaking musicians took over the world\u2019s most popular video platform like never before. In fact, of the top 10 most watched music videos on YouTube, eight of them are sung in Spanish, while the other two are in English.
Leading the way is the remixed version of \u201cTe Bot\u00e9,\u201d which dominated the Latin music market in incredible fashion this year. The song is approaching 1.5 billion views (which it will likely reach by the time the year concludes), and it was surprisingly only released in April. The track features many of the biggest names in the Latin music world, and their presence helped take the catchy cut to new heights.
The highest-ranking English song is Maroon 5\u2019s \u201cGirls Like You,\u201d which comes in at No. 3 and which benefited from a celebrity-packed video. The band re-released the song with a verse from Cardi B, after which point it jumped right into the top 10 on singles charts all around the world, and it eventually ended up living at No. 1 in the U. S. for seven weeks. The only other English-language song on the listing is Drake\u2019s \u201cGod\u2019s Plan,\u201d which came with a feel-good video and which also ended up ruling the Hot 100 for months.
Puerto Rican singer Ozuna is by far the king of YouTube this year, as his name appears on four of the top 10 most watched videos. He had a hand in the Nos. 1,5,9 and 10 most popular clips on the Google-owned platform, with only the last of the bunch being one he leads the charge on.
