\nIan Holm, an acclaimed British actor whose long career included roles in \u00ab\u00a0Chariots of Fire\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0The Lord of the Rings\u00a0\u00bb has died. He was 88.
Holm died peacefully Friday morning in a hospital, surrounded by his family and carer, his agent, Alex Irwin, said in a statement. His illness was Parkinson’s related.

An established figure in the Royal Shakespeare Company, he won a Laurence Olivier Award for best actor for his performance in the title role of \u00ab\u00a0King Lear\u00a0\u00bb in 1998.
He won a British Academy Film Award and gained a supporting-actor Oscar nomination for portraying pioneering athletics coach Sam Mussabini in the hit 1982 film \u00ab\u00a0Chariots of Fire.\u00a0\u00bb
He also appeared in \u00ab\u00a0The Fifth Element,\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0Alien,\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0The Sweet Hereafter,\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0Time Bandits,\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0The Emperor’s New Clothes\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0The Madness of King George.\u00a0\u00bb More recently, he portrayed Bilbo Baggins in \u00ab\u00a0The Hobbit\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0The Lord of the Rings\u00a0\u00bb trilogies.
Holm was knighted in 1998 for his services to drama.
