<!--DEBUG:--><!--DEBUG:dc3-united-states-music-in-english-pdf--><!--DEBUG:--><!--DEBUG:dc3-united-states-music-in-english-pdf--><!--DEBUG-spv-->{"id":1652379,"date":"2020-07-08T23:26:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T21:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nhub.news\/?p=1652379"},"modified":"2020-07-09T07:24:24","modified_gmt":"2020-07-09T05:24:24","slug":"fearing-cancellation-some-withdraw-signatures-from-open-letter-decrying-cancel-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nhub.news\/fr\/2020\/07\/fearing-cancellation-some-withdraw-signatures-from-open-letter-decrying-cancel-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Fearing Cancellation, Some Withdraw Signatures From Open Letter Decrying Cancel Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Oh, the irony.<\/b><br \/>\nSome of the public figures who signed an open letter decrying the rise of cancel culture retracted their support, presumably fearing they too might become a victim of it.<br \/>As we highlighted yesterday, 150 intellectuals, authors and activists including Noam Chomsky, Salman Rushdie and JK Rowling signed the letter, which was published by Harpers Magazine.<br \/>The letter criticized how \u201cthe free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted\u201d as a result of \u201can intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty.\u201d<br \/>\u201cEditors are fired for running controversial pieces; books are withdrawn for alleged inauthenticity; journalists are barred from writing on certain topics; professors are investigated for quoting works of literature in class; a researcher is fired for circulating a peer-reviewed academic study; and the heads of organizations are ousted for what are sometimes just clumsy mistakes,\u201d states the letter.<br \/>Following its publication and pushback from leftists, some of the signatories caved and publicly withdrew their support.<br \/>\u201cI did not know who else had signed that letter,\u201d tweeted author Jennifer Finney Boylan Dog. \u201cI thought I was endorsing a well meaning, if vague, message against internet shaming. I did know Chomsky, Steinem, and Atwood were in, and I thought, good company.\u201d<br \/>\u201cThe consequences are mine to bear. I am so sorry,\u201d she added.<br \/>Historian Kerri Greenidge also tweeted, \u201cI do not endorse this @Harpers letter.
