And, to give you a nudge in the right direction of what to look out for, here are all the new TV shows and movies coming to Netflix UK in July. Over the next few weeks, Netflix UK’s freshly updated library is sure to brighten up your mood, and leading this month’s lineup is the platform’s hotly-anticipated, and frankly bizarre reality TV dating series Sexy Beasts, a 1982 Steven Speilberg sci-fi classic, a rare look inside the life of a tennis champion, and much, much more. So, it appears users can once again look forward to a tonne of thrilling new options throughout July, and as we (hopefully) face the final stretch of lockdown restrictions in the run-up to summer, the platform’s updated catalogue could not be arriving at a better time. This Oscar-winning romantic drama stars the likes of Richard Gere, Debra Winger, and Louis Gossett Jr., and follows the story of a young naval recruit (Gere) who seeks the help of a tough Gunnery Sergeant and his new girlfriend so he can achieve his dream of becoming an aviator. Released in 1982, the film enjoyed both commercial and critical success upon its release, with famed critic Robert Ebert describing An Officer and a Gentleman as “a wonderful movie precisely because it’s so willing to deal with matters of the heart.” Directed by Roy Chow, this fantasy-action film is adapted from the video game of the same name and tells the story of the collapse of a dynasty and the rise of China’s legendary and mythical heroes of the Three Kingdom Period. Starring Louis Koo, Carina Lau, and Wang Kai, among others, the film was initially released in Hong Kong and China in April 2021 and Dynasty Warrior’s global distribution rights were later purchased by Netflix for a record-breaking figure. Steven Spielberg’s 1982 sci-fi classic follows the story of a young boy named Elliot as he stumbles upon an extraterrestrial (otherwise known as E.T.) who is stranded on Earth. After befriending the alien, Elliot decides to help E.T. return to his home planet. However, he soon runs into trouble while attempting to keep E.T. a secret from his family, friends, and the authorities. This BBC-Netflix co-production stars Tahar Rahim and Jenna Coleman and is based on the horrific crimes of serial killer Charles Sobhraj. Set in the mid-1970s, the drama takes place at the height of Sobhraj’s killing spree, when he would drug, rob, and murder young Western backpackers as they travelled across a famous trail through Bangkok and Thailand. Charles (Rahim) would be assisted with his crimes by his then-girlfriend, Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Coleman). However, when a Dutch diplomat begins to investigate the unexplained murders, all roads begin to lead to Sobhraj. Starring the likes of Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, and Will Poulter, this 2019 folk horror centres on a group of friends who travel to Sweden to attend a festival that is held once every 90 years. Created by Glen Zipper, Cat People delves into human-feline relationships and introduces viewers to people around the globe who rescue, care for and celebrate these generally independent creatures. “Cat people come in all shapes and sizes, but they share a love for their enchanting, unique feline friends. This docuseries reveals their tales,” an official Netflix synopsis teases Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and set in the late 1960s, this 2019 comedy-drama tells the story of actor Rick Dalton, who is struggling to book new gigs after finding fame and fortune on television throughout the 1950s. Residing in Hollywood, Rick lives next door to filmmaker Roman Polanski and budding actress Sharon Tate, the fate of whom is altered forever by members of the infamous Manson family. The film boasts an all-star cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, and enjoyed a warm response from critics following its cinematic release. Directed by Peter Lord and Nick Park, this 2000 animated adventure revolves around a group of chickens who live on an egg farm that is overseen by the menacing Mrs Tweedy. However, when Tweedy’s plans to turn the chickens into meat pies become clear, the resident chickens devise a plan to escape from the farm once and for all. Grossing more than $224 million, Chicken Run became the highest-grossing stop motion animated movie in history, and the film’s long-awaited sequel is currently in the works. Reality TV dating shows have become all the rage in recent years, with the likes of Love Island and Too Hot to Handle dominating the airwaves. However, Netflix’s latest offering is sure to stand out in the crowd. The concept of the news series is to discover whether or not it’s possible to find true love based on personality alone, and, in order to achieve this, participants on the lookout for love must attend a string of dates using face mask disguises of animals and other-worldly creatures. Think First Dates meet The Masked Singer.
