MacRumors reports that the Amazon Prime Video app for macOS supports platform mainstays such as AirPlay, Picture-in-Picture, and in-app payments for rentals as well as on-demand content. Videos can also be downloaded for offline viewing, but probably only for a limited time. (Many services require users to periodically go online to verify their subscription status.) Calling the new Amazon Prime Video app a native Mac app might be a bit of a stretch. Many interactions, such as signing in to an account or changing the PIN used to make purchases, happen via an in-app browser. The app also can’t be maximized—it has a maximum width that occupies about two-thirds of the MacBook Air’s display—and quits when the window is closed. Still, the app supports many of the most important Mac features, and the ability to download videos to watch later will probably be enough to entice many Amazon Prime Video subscribers alone. The wonkiness associated with Amazon’s custom user interface paradigm also becomes less important when the app is actually being used to watch some kind of video, of course. Amazon Prime Video is available now via the Mac App Store on macOS Big Sur 11.4 and later.

The video streaming platform finally has a client for the Mac.
