\nTwo of the three men convicted of killing Malcolm X in 1965 had their judgements vacated Thursday after a review of the case revealed the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York Police Department withheld crucial evidence that could have led to their acquittal. \u201cThis points to the truth that law enforcement over history has often failed to live up to its responsibilities,\u201d Vance said to the New York Times. \u201cThese men did not get the justice that they deserved.\u201d Malcolm X was a minister and activist who advocated for Black empowerment during the civil rights movement. He was a target of the Nation of Islam, a Black nationalist group of which he was once a member. He was shot to death by three men believed to be members of the group inside the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan while giving a speech on February 21, 1965. One of the shooters, Mujahid Abdul Halim, was apprehended at the scene. Aziz and Islam were accused of being the other two shooters after ten eyewitnesses say they saw the two at the scene, though their statements were contradictory and there was no physical evidence connecting them to the scene. Halim confessed to the murder and stated that Aziz and Islam were innocent during his testimony.<\/p>\n
