Volume 5 Part 2 will bring The Professor (Álvaro Morte) and his fellow robbers’ storyline to a close with the conclusion of their heist in the Bank of Spain; whether this will end well or not is to be seen. Lisbon (Itziar Ituño), Denver (Jaime Lorente), Rio (Miguel Herrán), Helsinki (Darko Perić), Mónica (Esther Acebo), Palermo (Rodrigo de la Serna), Bogotá (Hovik Keuchkerian), and Manila (Belén Cuesta) remain in the bank while The Professor is outside hoping to save them. Despite the show’s popularity it will be ending after the events of the next five episodes, and here Newsweek can share why this decision was made. The cast and crew took part in a virtual press conference, which Newsweek attended, where executive producer Jesús Colmenar addressed their reasoning behind the show coming to an end. Reflecting on the second half of season 5, Colmenar said: « I think it has a different pace, it’s not such a warlike confrontation, but it’s a series that is always in crescendo until the end, until the last episode, and I will say it’s a very special one and different to what we’ve done until now. » He added that while Part 1 of Volume 5 was packed with « pure adrenaline » the forthcoming episodes would be more « emotional » and will have « unexpected twists and turns. » Creator Álex Pina added: « The fifth season volume 1 and 2 have this watershed moment, which is the death of Tokyo. It’s a ticking bomb really that changes the show radically and it does veer towards the end. » The decision to end the story was also so that they didn’t overstay their welcome, and tire of new ideas with the characters. In the conference, Morte explained: « The show is coming to an end when it had to come to an end. It’s the perfect time. « We cannot squeeze the characters anymore, we’ve taken the best from them and I think it’s a really smart decision to stop here. » It was also confirmed that the writers gave the show a definitive ending, and they haven’t « left the door open for a sixth or seventh season. » Fans of Money Heist may be sad to hear that the show is over, but it’s not the end of the franchise as a whole as Netflix announced a prequel series that will focus on Berlin (played by Pedro Alonso). The new show will be set before Season 1 and 2’s heist in the Royal Mint of Spain, which was where the character sacrificed himself to give the others enough time to escape the police’s clutches. Netflix have also confirmed that there will be a Korean remake of the show, which will star Squid Game’s Park Hae-soo as Berlin.
