During her tribute to Tina Turner at the BET Awards, Patti LaBelle was unable to see the teleprompter, causing her to miss some of the lyrics to Turner’s \u00ab\u00a0Simply the Best.\u00a0\u00bb<\/b>
\nPatti LaBelle, referred to as the \u201cGodmother of Soul,\u201d paid a powerful tribute to the \u201cQueen of Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll\u201d Tina Turner at this year\u2019s BET Awards, in light of the star\u2019s tragic passing last month.
LaBelle took to the stage, with Tina\u2019s name in lights shining behind her, at the Microsoft Theater, preparing to sing Turner\u2019s 1989 hit song \u201cSimply the Best.\u201d
Unfortunately, she became unable to see the teleprompter, exclaiming to the audience, \u201cI can\u2019t see the words and I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m tryin\u2019, y\u2019all!\u201d
LaBelle then called out, \u201cWhere are my background singers?,\u201d referencing the 1996 National Tree Lighting, when the cue cards were out of order during her performance of the holiday hit \u201cThis Christmas,\u201d per People.
A representative from BET eventually told The Hollywood Reporter, \u201cDue to the crowd\u2019s enthusiasm, the teleprompter was obstructed, obscuring Ms. LaBelle\u2019s view of the lyrics. Nonetheless, we couldn\u2019t be more grateful to Ms. LaBelle for lending her incredible talent to this moment.\u201d
Following her performance, LaBelle told Entertainment Tonight that \u201cno matter what voice (she was) in\u2026 (she) was giving it up for Tina Turner, \u2019cause she\u2019s simply the best.\u201d
\u201cSo you heard a little tweak every now and then out there, but I love her, and I did my best,\u201d Turner continued.
Regardless, LaBelle pushed through and kept up the energy throughout the entirety of the performance, shouting out \u201cGod bless you, Tina Turner, BET, hip-hop!\u201d to the crowd, who gave her an enthusiastic standing ovation.
According to THR, this year, the BET awards honored the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and rapper Busta Rhymes, while paying tribute to Turner and rapper Takeoff of Migos fame, who was killed last November. The other two members of Migos, Quavo and Offset, reunited to honor Takeoff, singing hits \u201cHotel Lobby\u201d and \u201cBad and Boujee,\u201d per CNN.
