In a Fox News interview, Trump dismissed criticism that the strike was \u201cunjustified\u201d and \u201cillegal\u201d<\/b>
\nPresident Donald Trump said he witnessed the early morning military strike against Venezuela that led to the capture of the country\u2019s leader, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, \u201clike I was watching a television show.\u201d
In a Saturday morning phone interview on \u201cFox & Friends,\u201d Trump recalled viewing the attack in real-time from Mar-a-Lago. \u201cIf you would have seen the speed, the violence,\u201d said Trump, \u201dit was an amazing thing.\u201d
Trump described the operation as \u201cextremely complex,\u201d and said he \u201cwas told by real military people that there\u2019s no other country on earth that can do such a maneuver.\u201d
The capture of Maduro, who was indicted in New York in 2020 on drug-trafficking charges, follows months of escalation in the region as the US military has conducted lethal strikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats.
Several lawmakers on Saturday questioned Trump\u2019s authority to act, with Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern writing on X that \u201cwithout authorization from Congress, and with the vast majority of Americans opposed to military action, Trump just launched an unjustified, illegal strike on Venezuela.\u201d
When asked about McGovern\u2019s comments on Fox, Trump said \u201cthese are weak, stupid people,\u201d and proceeded to suggest the US would\u2019ve destroyed if he hadn\u2019t been elected in 2024.
Asked about the future of Venezuela\u2019s oil industry, Trump said, \u201cwe\u2019re going to be very much involved in it.\u201d The president also said the US was prepared for a \u201csecond wave\u201d strike if needed.<\/p>\n
