Mar\u00eda Corina Machado said Nicolas Maduro’s former vice president Delcy Rodr\u00edguez was \u00ab\u00a0one of the main architects\u00a0\u00bb of his oppressive regime in Venezuela.<\/b>
\nMar\u00eda Corina Machado, the leader of Venezuela’s opposition party, said interim president Delcy Rodr\u00edguez is \u00ab\u00a0perhaps even more ruthless\u00a0\u00bb than her predecessor Nicholas Maduro.
\u00ab\u00a0Everybody in Venezuela and abroad knows perfectly who she is and the role she has played\u00a0\u00bb, in the country’s oppressive regime, Machado said in an interview with Tony Dokoupil airing Tuesday night on \u00ab\u00a0CBS Evening News.\u00a0\u00bb
Rodr\u00edguez, Maduro’s vice president, was sworn in as the interim president on Monday after Maduro was captured and taken to the United States. The Venezuelan military has expressed their support for Rodr\u00edguez, 56.
Machado, who has been in hiding since Venezuela’s disputed 2024 election, emerging only to claim the Nobel Peace Prize in December, criticized those who believe Rodr\u00edguez should lead the country. She described Rodr\u00edguez as one of the architects of Maduro’s brutal regime, and the leader of torture sites in Venezuela. Former hostage negotiator Roger Carstens told \u00ab\u00a060 Minutes\u00a0\u00bb that the Maduro regime had held and tortured Americans who had been arrested in Venezuela for minor offenses.
Rodr\u00edguez was sanctioned during Mr. Trump’s first term for her role in helping the Maduro regime \u00ab\u00a0maintain power and solidify his authoritarian rule.\u00a0\u00bb She has not been indicted on any criminal charges in the U.S. for her role in Maduro’s government.
Machado said that she believes the U.S. has \u00ab\u00a0instructed (Rodr\u00edguez) to take certain actions regarding further dismantling of the criminal structure as a path towards a complete transition to democracy in Venezuela.\u00a0\u00bb But Machado said \u00ab\u00a0nobody trusts her\u00a0\u00bb, which may complicate her new role as the country’s president.
Machado alleged that Rodr\u00edguez had been \u00ab\u00a0the main link\u00a0\u00bb in communications with Russia and Iran as well as \u00ab\u00a0other countries that have . criminal activities\u00a0\u00bb in Venezuela.
Despite the tumultuous circumstances, Machado said she still has faith in the Venezuelan people.<\/p>\n
