\nOttawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected US President Donald Trump\u2019s claim that Canada relies on the United States for its existence.
Speaking in Quebec City, Carney emphasised Ottawa\u2019s sovereignty and addressed Trump\u2019s comments after returning from Switzerland without meeting with the US president, Xinhua news agency reported.
On Wednesday, Trump said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that \u201cCanada lives because of the United States.\u201d
\u201cCanada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership. In the economy, in security and in rich cultural exchange,\u201d Carney said. \u201cBut Canada doesn\u2019t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.\u201d
Trump also reiterated his ambition to control Greenland, which threatens to tear apart relations with several of its closest allies, as Washington\u2019s relationship with Europe faces a hostile transition under Trump\u2019s leadership of the US superpower.
Trump proclaimed America as an \u201ceconomic engine on the planet\u201d and slammed Europe, saying parts of the continent were \u201cnot recognizable.\u201d
\u201cThe USA is the economic engine on the planet. And when America booms, the entire world booms. It\u2019s been the history,\u201d he said at Davos, adding, \u201cI love Europe, and I want to see Europe go good, but it\u2019s not heading in the right direction.\u201d The US cares about the people of Europe, he went on, reiterating his \u201cdeep bond\u201d with the continent he shares his ancestry with.
