The UK prizes \u2014 officially called the EE BAFTA Film Awards \u2014 often provide clues about who will triumph at Hollywood\u2019s Academy Awards, held this year on March 15.<br \/>This year, unusually, Oscar nominations were announced first, with \u201cSinners\u201d securing a record 16 nominations, followed by 13 for \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<br \/>The British academy has recognised several performers overlooked by the Oscars, including supporting actor nominees Paul Mescal for \u201cHamnet\u201d and Odessa A\u2019zion for \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d.<br \/>The BAFTAs also have a distinctly British accent, with a separate category of best British film. Its 10 nominees include \u201cThe Ballad of Wallis Island\u201d, \u201cPillion\u201d, \u201cI Swear\u201d and \u201cBridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.\u201d<br \/>Most BAFTA winners are chosen by 8,500 members of the UK academy of industry professionals, with one \u2013 the Rising Star Award \u2013 selected by public vote from a shortlist of nominees. This year\u2019s rising star contenders are Infiniti, Aramayo, \u201cSinners\u201d star Miles Caton and British actors Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling.<br \/>Like other major movie awards, Britain\u2019s film academy has introduced changes in recent years to increase diversity.<br \/>In 2020, no women were nominated as best director for the seventh year running, and all 20 nominees in the lead and supporting performer categories were white.
