Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Catherine O\u2019Hara died Friday, Jan. 30, at the age of 71. Her agency CAA confirmed to Variety that she died at her home in Los Angeles after a brief illness.
O\u2019Hara got her start in sketch comedy as a cast member on the Canadian sketch series Second City Television (SCTV); she earned her first Emmy for writing on the series.
She went on to star in films like Beetlejuice, Home Alone and four Christopher Guest mockumentaries, before experiencing a career resurgence thanks to the hit comedy Schitt\u2019s Creek, for which she won her first acting Emmy. In 2025, O\u2019Hara appeared in The Last of Us and The Studio, receiving Emmy nominations for both.
SCTV isn\u2019t streaming online, but these are 11 other O\u2019Hara projects worth checking out to celebrate a tremendous life and career.
O\u2019Hara starred as Delia Deetz, the artsy stepmother to Winona Ryder\u2019s Lydia, in Beetlejuice, which marked the first of her four collaborations with director and screenwriter Tim Burton. She went on to reprise her role in the 2024 sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

For many generations, this was the entry point to O\u2019Hara\u2019s work, as Home Alone has become a Christmas-season classic. In the Chris Columbus film, she played Kate McCallister, the mother who accidentally leaves her son Kevin (Macauley Culkin) at home when the family takes off for a holiday trip to Paris.
She reprised the role in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, where Kevin is left behind again \u2014 this time in New York City.

O\u2019Hara also lent her voice to numerous animated features, including the cult-classic Henry Selick and Tim Burton collaboration The Nightmare Before Christmas. In it, she voiced Sally, the psychic rag doll-like creation of Doctor Finkelstein and Jack Skellington\u2019s love interest.

In the first of four film collaborations with director Christopher Guest, O\u2019Hara starred as amateur performer Sheila Albertson (opposite Fred Willard) in the mockumentary about a group of untalented, enthusiastic midwesterners cast in a musical revue by a director hoping to return to former glory.

For the first time (outside of SCTV) \u2014 but not for the last time \u2014 O\u2019Hara and Eugene Levy played husband and wife in this Guest mockumentary that follows five dogs, owners, and trainers who are entering into the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. O\u2019Hara and Levy play the Flecks, a middle-class couple entering their Norwich terrier into the show; as the film goes on, they encounter many of Cookie\u2019s ex-lovers trying to seduce her again.

O\u2019Hara takes on the mother role again \u2014 this time to dysfunctional brothers Colin Hanks and Jack Black \u2014 in the 2002 comedy Orange County, which follows Hanks\u2019 character as his guidance counselor accidentally attaches the transcript of the worst student in school to his college applications, causing him to be rejected from his dream school.

O\u2019Hara\u2019s third collaboration with Guest is set at a folk music reunion concert in which three groups reunite on television for the first time in decades; it also marks the second time she was married onscreen to Levy. The pair played Mitch & Mickey, a well-known married folk duo who broke up (both the duo and their marriage) years before the events of the film and are now taking part in the reunion concert.

The film industry is the setting for O\u2019Hara\u2019s fourth and final collaboration with Guest, For Your Consideration. She plays a character actress portraying a dying matriarch in a low-budget 1940s-set drama, Home for Purim. Despite the film not being finished yet, the cast begins to hear unattributed rumors that their performances may be generating awards buzz.

In the role that won O\u2019Hara her first acting Emmy (and perhaps introduced her to a new generation of TV watchers), she portrayed Moira Rose, the matriarch of a rich family who loses everything. She acted opposite her longtime collaborator Levy, who once again played her husband, plus Levy\u2019s real-life son Daniel and Annie Murphy as her children.
Initially resistant to the idea of being poor and living out of a roadside motel, Moira eventually comes to form bonds with the people of Schitt\u2019s Creek. Over the course of the six season run, she became known for outrageous outfits and saying simple words in ways you\u2019ve never heard them said before.

O\u2019Hara appeared in the 2025 documentary about the life and career of her close friend and SCTV and Home Alone co-star John Candy. In it, she recounts the heartfelt eulogy she gave at Candy\u2019s funeral when he died at age 43 in 1994.

In 2025, O\u2019Hara was nominated for two Emmys. The first was for her guest role on The Last of Us; she appeared in three episodes of the postapocalyptic drama as Gail, Joel\u2019s (Pedro Pascal) cynical therapist.

O\u2019Hara\u2019s second 2025 Emmy nomination was for her supporting work in the breakout comedy The Studio. She plays Patty, the ousted head of Continental Studios and mentor of new studio head Matt (Seth Rogen), in Rogen\u2019s satire of the film industry.
O\u2019Hara is currently nominated for Season 1 of The Studio at The Actor Awards, which will be announced on March 1.
