Larian Studios\u2019 writers and developers aren\u2019t involved in Craig Mazin\u2019s Baldur\u2019s Gate 3 HBO adaptation, despite it continuing the game\u2019s story.<\/b>
\nIf you haven’t heard the biggest gaming and entertainment news to come out in the last 24 hours, Baldur’s Gate 3 is getting a live-action adaptation on HBO from The Last of Us and Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin. However, what you may have missed is that none of the developers from Larian Studios, including the game’s writers, are involved with the show, despite it being a continuation of the game’s original story.
Reactions online are mixed, but it appears Larian’s director of publishing, Michael Douse, is not happy about the forthcoming adaptation of Baldur’s Gate 3. Douse said the following in a post on X: \u00ab\u00a0I’ve spent the last 8 to 10 years of my life with the writers & creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 and they’re the most incredible storytellers & creators in the space. Only hope is that they get both the credit deserved & the characters are represented at the same level as the game.\u00a0\u00bb His bio on X now reads: \u00ab\u00a0the Chernobyl show was pretty good.\u00a0\u00bb
After Geoff Keighley broke the news that no one at Larian would be involved in the development of the series, Douse had an interesting comment: \u00ab\u00a0Except that we made it popular enough for it to be referred to as Baldur’s Gate 3\u00a0\u00bb, he wrote.
While Larian CEO and director Swen Vincke struck a more optimistic tone online \u2014 even revealing that Mazin reached out to the studio to talk \u2014 some fans were far less enthusiastic. Many remain unconvinced that the outreach means Larian will have any real involvement in what ultimately gets produced. Others still feel burned after the last season of The Last of Us, which took liberties with the source material that ultimately didn\u2019t work \u2014 despite game creator Neil Druckmann being involved for two seasons before leaving.
With no one from Larian at the helm alongside Mazin, many now fear worse is in store for a continuation of Baldur\u2019s Gate 3\u2019s story without any of the game’s creatives along for the ride.<\/p>\n
