Oriental Land’s labor union will make the roughly 20,000 temp workers at Disney theme parks members from April 1, inviting them to negotiate for better wages and employment terms amid severe labor shortages.
The change, agreed on between management and labor, will multiply union membership from about 2,900 to roughly 22,000, covering more than 80% of total employees.
Industries such as retail, restaurants and autos were among the first to let temporary workers join their unions. Still, it is rare for 20,000 employees to become members at once.
Most of Tokyo Disney Resort’s non-full-time staffers work inside the theme parks, running rides, serving customers at restaurants and shops, and directing cars at parking lots.
By joining the union, temp workers can negotiate for higher hourly wages and paid leave. Next spring, the union will begin negotiating the details of working conditions for those workers.
While working part-time at theme parks was once popular, some facilities are finding it difficult to fill positions. Oriental Land in January held recruitment interviews in Osaka for part-time positions for the first time. The company is also in the process of improving benefits for current employees.<\/p>\n
