Investigators pored over a Japanese mountain on Tuesday after a massive avalanche tore through a group of high school students and teachers, killing eight, amid questions about why avalanche warnings were ignored and whether they had proper equipment.
The avalanche in central Japan on Monday, which struck along about 50 meters (150 feet) of a steep slope just above a ski area, killed seven students and an instructor who were part of a 48-person group taking part in winter climbing training.
Thirty-eight people were injured, two of them critically.
Survivors told Japanese media they were training in a wooded area in Nasu, a town in Tochigi prefecture 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Tokyo, when suddenly there were shouts of \u00ab\u00a0Avalanche, get out of here! \u00a0\u00bb and voices yelling to take cover.
\u00ab\u00a0A second later the snow was there and I was buried up to my chest,\u00a0\u00bb said one 16-year-old student. \u00ab\u00a0My face was free, so I managed to get myself out. It was scary. \u00a0\u00bb

The group changed their original plan to climb a nearby mountain due to heavy snow and strong winds, switching instead to practicing walking in deep snow on a steep slope, media said.
\u00ab\u00a0Spring is much more dangerous in terms of avalanches than winter,\u00a0\u00bb mountaineer Ken Noguchi, himself the survivor of several avalanches, said on TV Asahi. Other experts blamed temperature fluctuations and deep, fresh snowfall on top of older snow.
A Tochigi prefectural police spokesman said investigations were focused on whether or not there had been judgment errors, in particular by the Tochigi High School Athletics Federation, which sponsored the training.
He declined to give further details but said investigators were also looking into whether the students had proper safety equipment, including beacons that can help locate those swept up in avalanches.
