UPDATE: 4: 30PM EST – It appears that while there is no confirmation of whether this was a terror incident or not, the man who tried to start an explosion near the Brussels Train Station was wearing a suicide bomb belt. Whether, the belt was real or fake (as we have seen in previous incidents) is unclear at this point. Since there are no new updates and the situation is contained we end our live coverage.
See below for more on the attack.
UPDATE 4: 02 p.m. Eastern on June 20,2017
A Brussels train station was evacuated today after an explosion. A senior Belgian law enforcement official told news media that the situation is “under control.” Traffic has been halted following the “small blast” at Brussels train station, according to local media. Belgian police said on Twitter that an incident had taken place and that the situation was under control.
Media reports indicate that the man was wearing a suicide belt, but the situation is under control as the Belgian military, armed with assault rifles, “neutralized” the person. All of this was confined to the Brussels Train Station, and it appears that there was only one suspect, not multiple people involved. Witnesses told CNN that they heard a very loud bang, which was followed by a small fire. The extent of the damage is unclear at this time, and there is no word of any injuries.
Although Belgian police aren’ t confirming, this might be a terrorist incident, which would make it yet another attack in just the past few days. Earlier this week, a terrorist mowed down people after Mosque prayers in London. Additionally, yesterday in Paris, a terrorist tried to blow up a police car.
Images of the scene at the train station posted on social media showed what appeared to be a small explosion inside the station and a large number of police officers gathered outside.
