New Jersey Governor Chris Christie found himself the object of mockery on Twitter when he was photographed sitting with his family on a stretch of public beach that is closed to everyone else in New Jersey.
The memes, jokes, and GIFs were epic.
Christie defended himself by pointing out that most of the state’s beaches are still open.
However, the stretch of beach that Christie, wearing shorts, a baseball cap, and a T-shirt, was photographed sitting on Sunday, July 2, is closed to everyone else in New Jersey because of a governmental shutdown over the state budget.

The wide shot was also getting attention.
That had a lot of people ballistic that the governor was photographed sitting on the beach others couldn’ t use.
Many people placed Christie in a beach chair into other iconic beach scenes.
Christie on a beach also ended up in many iconic movie scenes.
People also accused Christie of lying when he said at a news conference, “I didn’ t get any sun today.”
After photos emerged showing him sitting on a beach, his spokesman told NJ.com, “Yes, the governor was on the beach briefly today talking to his wife and family before heading into the office. He did not get any sun. He had a baseball hat on.”
Photographs of Christie and his family lounging on an otherwise empty beach told otherwise.
New Jersey.com got the big scoop after its photographer noticed the governor’s Sunday morning schedule was empty and took a plane ride over the Island State Park beach.
Wrote NJ.com, “People hoping to visit Island Beach State Park this holiday weekend were not allowed in because of the state government shutdown Gov. Chris Christie ordered amid the state budget standoff in Trenton. But there was one family there: Christie’s.”
The newspaper noted that the Christies “are using the summer beach house provided by the state for a weekend down the Shore.” This fact was well known; Christie had spoken about it before “beach-gate.”
“Run for governor, and you can have the residence, ” he said.
Jokes flew on Twitter, with many making fun of Christie’s famous girth, although there was the potential for serious political damage of the “let them eat sand” variety. The state wasn’ t being very lenient to others.
“Among those affected were a group of Cub Scouts forced to leave a state park campsite and people trying to obtain or renew documents from the state motor vehicle commission, ” reported NBC News.
