The Keystone pipeline has leaked more than 200,000 gallons of oil in South Dakota, the company for the project said on Thursday.
TransCanada said in a statement that their crews responded to a leak at their Amherst, South Dakota site on Thursday morning and shut down the pipeline after about 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons had leaked.
“The safety of the public and environment are our top priorities and we will continue to provide updates as they become available,” TransCanada said.
The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources told South Dakota’s KSFY-TV that officials don’t believe the leak affected any drinking water systems.
“Ultimately, the cleanup responsibility lies with TransCanada, and they’ll have to clean it up in compliance with our state regulations,” Brian Walsh, an environmental scientist manager at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, told the station.
