Amazon is headed to Middle-earth after booking a multi-season commitment to a “Lord of the Rings” series.
The series will serve as a prequel to “The Fellowship of the Ring,” but there’s also a possibility for spinoffs.
“‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series at Amazon Studios, said in a statement.

Amazon may have forked over as much as $250 million for the rights, according to Deadline .
Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, starring Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Sean Astin and Orlando Bloom, grossed almost $6 billion worldwide and earned 17 Academy Awards.
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said in a statement.
