Trump Congratulates Doug Jones and Claims He Knew Roy Moore Couldn't Win a General Election

On Tuesday, the people of Alabama ventured to the polls to cast their ballots for their next U. S. senator.
In a close race, Democratic candidate Doug Jones was named the victor, which marked the first time a Democrat had been elected to the Senate in Alabama since 1992.
In the wake of the GOP defeat, President Donald Trump tweeted his congratulations to Jones “on a hard-fought victory”:
Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!

The president added that write-in votes “played a very big factor” but conceded that “a win is a win.”
A short while later, Trump claimed that Republican candidate Roy Moore’s inability to win a general election was exactly why he endorsed Luther Strange in the primary:
The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election. I was right! Roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!

He noted that Moore “worked hard” but added that “the deck was stacked against him.”
Moore has called for a recount and declined to concede the election.
