North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has bested his American and South Korean counterparts amid the latest tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin strongman said Thursday that Kim Jong Un was “shrewd and mature” and had won the latest standoff with the West over his nuclear and missile program.
“I believe Mr. Kim Jong-un has certainly won this round,” Putin said during a meeting with Russian journalists broadcast on state TV.
His glowing comments come after North Korea and South Korea held talks on Tuesday, a move that came after a prolonged period of tension over Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear programs.
Putin’s praise follows President Trump boasting that he was responsible for the diplomatic developments.
Trump, who has repeatedly taunted and teased Kim and dubbed him “Little Rocket Man, sparked fears of a nuclear war and drew widespread condemnation last week when he used juvenile terms to brag that he commands a “more powerful” nuclear arsenal.

Putin, apparently working to raise his clout and influence in the region, urged dialogue to end the nuclear standoff back in October.
Trump has since warmed to the idea after telling Secretary of State Tillerson he was “wasting his time trying to negotiate” with Kim.
Putin said Thursday he believes the crisis can be resolved without conflict.
He said Kim “is an absolutely competent and already mature politician” who has “solved his strategic task — he has a nuclear warhead and a global-range missile.”
Now, in his view, Kim is “cleaning up the situation, smoothing it, calming it.”
