The Seahawks’ rushing game stalled in a frustrating 2017 campaign.
The Seattle Seahawks fired offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and offensive line coach Tom Cable, the team confirmed on Wednesday.
Further staff changes could be on the way, with multiple reports indicating that defensive coordinator Kris Richard is not expected to return next season.
«We are challenge by change, but excited to attack the future with great purpose,» Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said in a statement. «I want to thank both Tom and Darrell for their role in helping take this program to a championship level. I will always be grateful for this opportunity to coach and compete alongside these great men.»
Bevell, 48, had been the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator since 2011 and helped them reach two Super Bowls, including a title in 2013. He was instrumental in the development of quarterback Russell Wilson.
«I would like to thank the entire Seahawks organization for seven great seasons,» Bevell said in a statement. «I can’t thank Mr. (Paul) Allen, Pete Carroll, John Schneider, our coaching staff and players enough for the support and hard work they put in to help build the championship success of this team.»
Carroll said after the team’s 9-7 playoff-less season that he’d evaluate his staff. Seattle finished 2017 ranked 15th in total offense, with the running game a focal point of the team’s struggles. Wilson finished as the team’s leading rusher with 586 yards and accounted for all but one of the team’s 38 offensive touchdowns this season.
Although key to the Seahawks’ best offensive teams under Carroll, his 2014 play call — a failed pass from the 1-yard line in the final seconds of Super Bowl XLIX that was picked off by the Patriots’ Malcolm Butler and led to a 28-24 loss — was a defining moment. «It’s a terribly memory,» he told the Seattle Times in 2016 . «It’s always going to be there.»
Bevell, a former quarterback at Wisconsin, was the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings for five seasons before his time in Seattle.
