CASEVILLE, MI — Authorities are investigating a house fire that resulted in the death of one person in Caseville.
At 4:12 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, Huron County Central Dispatch received a call that a house at 8967 Crescent Beach Road was on fire. Caseville firefighters responded to the scene and found the structure engulfed in flames, according to Sheriff Kelly Hanson.
Though firefighters initially suspected two people were inside the burning residence, a deputy learned from a family member only one person was inside.
At about 5:45 a.m., firefighters found the severely burned remains of a woman on the porch, just outside the door. The house was destroyed, Hanson said.
Deputies and members of the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal Division are investigating the matter as the cause of the fire remains unknown. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
Positive identification of the remains is pending.
Mutual aid was provided by firefighters from Fairhaven and Winsor townships.
