“I want people to know that he died a hero.»
Junior ROTC (JROTC) cadet Peter Wang was killed while saving other students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and people are voicing their support for him to be buried with full military honors.
The 15-year-old was a member of the school’s JROTC program and dreamed of attending West Point to be a “service to our country.”
The Sun-Sentinel reported that during the shooting, he held the door open so other students could escape to safety. He, unfortunately, was shot multiple times and died.
“He is so brave. He is the person who is genuinely kind to everyone. He doesn’t care about popularity,“ his 24-year-old cousin Lin Chen told the Sun-Sentinel. ”He always liked to cheer people up. He is like the big brother everyone wished they had.»
Fox News reported that JROTC does not provide basic training and therefore isn’t considered to be “in the military.” However, over 21,000 people believe Wang’s bravery earned full military honors and have taken their request to the United States government.
“His selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area,” a petition on WhiteHouse.gov said. “Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such, and deserves a full honors military burial.”
The petition requires 100,000 signatures in 30 days for the White House to consider and respond to the request.
“A military funeral would really help the family,“ family friend Jesse Pan told the New York Daily News. ”They are devastated.»
Pan added that the Wang’s parents, both Chinese immigrants, moved to Parkland specifically so their son could join the JROTC program. He wanted to be a role model for his three younger brothers.
“I want people to know that he died a hero,» Wang’s friend, Aiden Ortiz, told ABC News 10.
