Even before the massacre in Florida, Democratic lawmakers in New York were pushing legislation that would allow judges to confiscate weapons from individuals singled out as dangerous by their own relatives.
Five states have already adopted some form of the “Gun Violence Restraining Order” — California, Connecticut, Indiana, Oregon and Washington — giving either close relatives or law enforcement the right to petition the courts to remove weapons or bar individuals from buying them.
In New York, a version of the measure passed the Democratic-run Assembly 84-52 on June 15.
But a companion bill languished in the Republican-controlled state Senate.
“It’s not just a slaughter. This has turned into a ritual of slaughter,” said Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-LI), one of the bill’s sponsors.
