Crews were called to the scene of a gas leak in downtown Sun Prairie, Wis., near Madison, around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday. WE Energies said a contractor had struck a 4-inch natural gas main. Around 7 p.m., the building exploded, producing a massive fire. The smoke could be seen from miles away. Several buildings suffered significant damage. A half-mile perimeter was still in place around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. Seven civilians were transported to the hospital and later released. The Sun Prairie Fire Department said the firefighter who died had been with the department for more than a decade.
