Based on the rising volume and expanding attention, some may find this blasphemous, but I don’t like betting preseason football….
The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Dallas Cowboys plus-4 at San Francisco 49ers: $330 to win $300
Based on the rising volume and expanding attention, some may find this blasphemous, but I don’t like betting preseason football.
Sure, it’s beatable. There’s value to be found. But it’s a lot of work, and with that time, I’d prefer to be preparing for the regular season than delving into playing-time projections for players mired in battles for emergency roles.
But I digress, it’s practically opening night, so the betting board is dominated by the NFL and there’s an obligation to join in on the action. It just so happens that one of the teams I’m looking to bet on most to start the year faces one of the teams I’m looking to fade most to start the year.
The Cowboys are set up for a rebound year. The 49ers might be decent too, but they look overvalued with the cult of big-time believers in Jimmy Garoppolo and Kyle Shanhan driving up their prices.
Getting four points is always enticing in what are typically low-scoring contests. Does it guarantee success?
Of course not. But it’s the preseason. Embrace the gamble.
Current Standings: Keefer (5-2, $10,908), Granger (4-0, $10,855), Grimala (4-2, $10,200), Brewer (2-4, $8,040)
