Voters are more trusting of President Donald Trump rather than Democratic leaders on growing the U. S. economy and protecting national security, according to a new poll.
About 45 percent of likely voters said they trusted Trump to “grow the U. S. economy” compared to 34 percent who said they trusted Democratic leaders to do so, according to a new nationwide Zogby Analytics poll published on Aug. 13. About 21 percent of respondents said they were unsure.
On the question of keeping American safe, the results were similar, with 45 percent saying they trusted Trump more while 38 percent said they trusted Democratic leaders more.
The numbers highlight a growing enthusiasm for Trump when compared to previous polls on the same two questions conducted in June and May. During those months, the percentage of voters who trusted trump hovered around 40 percent, showing an increase in 5 percent with the latest poll.
According to the pollster, the two questions are significant in deciding who to vote for.
“If Trump can show that under his tenure there is peace and prosperity, he might be hard to beat in 2020 and Republicans might be able to offset some loses and retain the House and Senate in the 2018 midterms,” the poll states.
The Zogby poll also found that Republicans are gaining ground on Democrats in the congressional generic. According to Zogby, the latest numbers show that 40 percent of voters are intending to vote Democrat, while 37 percent are planning to vote Republican.
In may, about 33 percent of respondents said they would vote Republican, marking an increase of 4 percent over the past few months.
The pollsters said that Trump at the moment is doing well with middle-income voters who earn $50-$75k annually.
“When it comes to income, Republicans do better with voters who earn $100k+ and Democrats do well with voters who earn <$100k,” the poll said. “It must be noted that with voters who earn $50k-$100k annually, democrats and republicans are statistically tied.”
Meanwhile, 42 percent of respondents approve of the way Trump is handling his job, according to a CNN poll published on Aug. 14.
