Over the past several decades, the strength of the manufacturing sector in the United States has declined by almost every measure. Forty years ago, more than 19 million Americans held manufacturing jobs, according to the U. S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Today, that figure has fallen by nearly 7 million.
These jobs typically provide good wages and benefits and are essential to the health of our economy. Of course, there are a variety of reasons for this troubling trend. Advancements in technology and automation certainly have contributed. However, I believe that U. S. trade agreements are at the center of this challenge and those who negotiated these deals have largely failed to protect American workers.
Given these longstanding trends, it can’t be surprising to see voters gravitating to political candidates who are challenging conventions and starting to call into question how we as a nation approach trade agreements. It’s one of the primary reasons, among others, that Donald Trump was elected president in 2016 and continues to maintain the support of many blue-collar workers across the country.
