FARMINGDALE, N. Y. – Where challengers to Brooks Koepka’s course-record 63 Thursday morning struggled to materialize that afternoon, they were in no short supply during Friday’s second round.
But even though there were 44 rounds under par, up significantly from 16 on Thursday, only one player in the field managed to gain ground on the defending champion.
Koepka made seven birdies for the second straight day and turned in a 5-under par 65. He heads into the third round of the 101st PGA Championship with a 7-shot lead at 12-under 128, the lowest 36-hole score in any major championship and he set a tournament record with a seven-shot lead.
Even though he is halfway there, he isn’t looking to take his foot off the gas pedal.
“I’d like to see that lead grow as large as it possibly can,” Koepka said. “I still have to go out there and do what I’m supposed to do, keep putting the ball in the right spot and make sure that you don’t make any double bogeys, and I should have a good chance of winning the championship.
