The world’s biggest phones are running scared because the Flagship Killer is back in town. The OnePlus 7 Pro has been revealed, and it’s a monster of a phone with a stunning redesign, a pop-up selfie camera, powerful flagship specs, and a price that’s hundreds of dollars less than the competition.
OnePlus has taken the wraps off the OnePlus 7 Pro, and the combination of a stunning design with the latest flagship specifications make it a hard phone to ignore — even if its price has crept up a little.
The first phone with Pro in the name from OnePlus, the OnePlus 7 Pro is what the company calls its ultra-premium phone, and for those on a more modest budget, it has the OnePlus 7 — an update of the OnePlus 6T. However, the OnePlus 7 won’t be sold in the U. S. Instead, OnePlus is still offering the OnePlus 6T to U. S. buyers at a slightly lower price than before, alongside the brand-new OnePlus 7 Pro.
Here’s everything you need to know about the OnePlus 7 Pro, and the OnePlus 7.
OnePlus has always followed smartphone design trends closely, but this year it’s going ahead of the curve. There’s almost no bezel around the display, and it makes the phone a stunning sight to behold. But the really amazing change is hidden beneath the design.
The keen-eyed will have noticed that something very important is missing from the OnePlus 7 Pro: A front-facing camera lens. But there’s no need for selfie fans to panic, the front-facing camera is still there, it’s just hidden from view. Taking inspiration from phones like the Vivo Nex S, the front-facing lens is housed on a mechanical pop-up slider. It will pop up when you need it and hide away when it’s not required. There’s no need to worry about durability either; OnePlus claims the mechanism has been tested over 300,000 times, which is enough to use it 150 times a day for the next five years. It will also automatically retract in a fraction of a second if it detects a drop, keeping it safe from fall damage.
There’s no point hiding the selfie camera away to emphasize the display if it’s not a great display. Thankfully, OnePlus has pulled out the stops to make the OnePlus 7 Pro’s screen an absolute stormer. It’s a massive 6.67-inch AMOLED beast running a QHD+ 3,120 x 1,440 resolution in an extra-long 19.5:9 aspect ratio. At 516 pixels per inch, it’s crisp, comes with an improved eye-saving Night Mode 2.0, HDR10+ support, and even has a 90Hz refresh rate that’ll make your use seem smoother than usual. It’s so good that DisplayMate has already confirmed the OnePlus 7 Pro’s display has achieved its highest A+ rating in tests.
Like the OnePlus 6T, there’s an in-display fingerprint underneath that impressive AMOLED display. It’s not an ultrasonic scanner like the Samsung Galaxy S10, but OnePlus claims it has improved the scanner’s unlock time and reliability.
That in-display fingerprint scanner means the back of the OnePlus 7 Pro has a clean and uncluttered look. There’s a vertically stacked triple-lens camera system on the back of the phone, with a dual LED flash and OnePlus’ logo underneath.
There’s still no water-resistance, though OnePlus said the device is water resistant and that IP ratings cost money — and the headphone jack is still missing. However, you will find dual stereo speakers tuned with Dolby Atmos, as well as a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone. The OnePlus 7 Pro will come in three colors: Nebula Blue, Almond, and Mirror Gray.
OnePlus is known for offering powerful flagship specs for a lower price than other manufacturers, earning the nickname “the Flagship Killer” for doing so.
