Kansas City Chiefs Reward Patrick Mahomes With Historic Contract

Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year deal, and contracts of that length are a rarity in the NFL.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ franchise quarterback will remain with the franchise through at least 2031.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news that Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year contract extension. The length of the deal puts Mahomes in unchartered territory.
Currently, only Matt Ryan, Jimmy Garoppolo, Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr have deals that go as long as five years. Mahomes’ is double that.
As Schefter noted, only a handful of quarterback have been signed to contracts with double-digit years, including Brett Favre’s lifetime contract with the Green Bay Packers in 2001, Drew Bledsoe’s 10-year deal with the New England Patriots in 2001, Donovan McNabb’s 12-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002 and Michael Vick’s 10-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons in 2004.
Financial terms have not yet been released, but speculation is that the dollar amount of Mahomes’ deal will be more than $400 million and top all players in cumulative money and per-year salary.
