A balanced attack sure was instrumental in Meralco’s 101-92 triumph over sister team NLEX in the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday night. But coach Norman Black was more impressed with how his wards played defense. “We want to really play as a team, to share the basketball,” Black said shortly after his Bolts got a winning streak going and improved to 3-2 inside the bubble at Angeles University Foundation powered by Smart 5G. “But I was more impressed with our defense. Our defense really stood out.” Meralco held NLEX to just 28 points in the paint, forcing the Road Warriors to settle for outside shots. The Meralco defense held the enemy to just 40 percent shooting from the field. The Bolts paired that stingy effort on defense with an equally sterling performance from Chris Newsome, who had 18 points, and Allein Maliksi who added 17 more off the bench. Raymond Almazan, who recorded his longest playing time since rejoining the team coming off rehab, added 11 points and nine rebounds in 27 minutes while imposing his presence in the middle—especially in the third frame where the Bolts gained control.
