Michigan native sentenced to prison: Threatened to shoot Ohio State football players

A Michigan fan’s mid-game threats to shoot Ohio State Buckeye football players while his team was losing led to a year-long federal prison sentence.
A 29-year-old Michigan native’s Wolverines were losing the annual football rivalry game with The Ohio State University when he typed messages on Facebook in 2018 threatening to shoot the Buckeye players, according to federal court records. Daniel Lee Rippy was sentenced to a year and one day in prison Tuesday in federal court in Columbus, according to a release from the U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio. «The sentence imposed must also serve to reign in the boldness of keyboard warriors who think that hiding behind a computer screen or cellular telephone gives them permission to send threatening and criminal communications,» prosecutors wrote. The Livermore, California resident had pleaded guilty three months ago to one count of making a threat in interstate communications, according to the release.
