\nInterpol President Meng Hongwei was reportedly detained by Chinese authorities Sunday and is now under investigation, just days after his wife reported him missing after he returned to China from a trip.
Meng, who is also\u00a0the vice minister of public security in China, \u201cis suspected of violating the law and is currently under the monitoring and investigation\u201d by China\u2019s National Supervisory Commission, according to Chinese media .
Meng\u2019s wife, Grace Meng, told reporters Sunday that she hadn\u2019t heard from her husband since Sept. 25, and claims she was sent a picture of a knife emoji from his number. A few minutes later, she said he sent her a message saying \u201cWait for my call,\u201d CBS reports. (RELATED: The President Of Interpol Is Missing In China)
Meng\u2019s wife said she did not get a call from him and is worried about his safety .
\u201cFrom now on, I have gone from sorrow and fear to the pursuit of truth, justice and responsibility toward history,\u201d she said. \u201cFor the husband whom I deeply love, for my young children, for the people of my motherland, for all the wives and children\u2019s husbands and fathers to no longer disappear.\u201d
Interpol is based in France and French authorities previously said they were investigating what happened to Meng, and called his whereabouts as a \u201cworrying disappearance.\u201d
\u201cIf Meng Hongwei has disappeared in China, then of course the most likely reason is an anticorruption investigation,\u201d\u00a0Deng Yuwen, a former editor of a Communist Party journal told The New York Times, \u00a0suggesting his disappearance ahead of a criminal investigation is not uncommon in China.
Interpol has made a formal request to China for more information on Meng\u2019s status.
