\nSixty-nine migrants who attempted to crossed the border over the weekend were arrested in California, U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told the Associated Press.
The arrests came as the migrants attempted to cross into the U. S. near San Diego from Tijuana.
McAleenan told the AP that policy allows border agents to use tear gas but added that the incident, which came as the migrants were throwing rocks, would be reviewed.
\u201cAs the events unfolded, quick, decisive and effective action prevented an extremely dangerous situation,\u201d McAleenan said.
The use of tear gas by border personnel was condemned Monday by many Democrats, who called the use of force inhumane. Children were reportedly among the migrants who were hit by the tear gas.
Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) on Sunday called the incident a «new low.»<\/p>\n
