\nPresident Trump on Tuesday disputed the scientific consensus that human activity contributes to climate change in his most expansive rejection yet of his own administration’s report on global warming.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Trump said \u201cI don\u2019t see\u201d that climate change is man-made and disagreed with the report’s findings that it poses significant health and safety concerns.
\u201cOne of the problems that a lot of people like myself, we have very high levels of intelligence but we\u2019re not necessarily such believers,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou look at our air and our water and it\u2019s right now at a record clean.\u201d
On the issue of whether global warming is caused by humans, Trump added: \u201cAs to whether or not it\u2019s man-made and whether or not the effects that you\u2019re talking about are there, I don\u2019t see it.\u201d
The comments come days after his administration published its first National Climate Assessment, which found that climate change could upend daily life for many Americans as it takes a toll on infrastructure, human health and the world’s energy supply. It also said current and global and regional efforts are not enough to reverse the trends.
Trump, who decided last year to withdraw from the Obama-era Paris Climate Accord, has previously criticized the report, and his top aides have said its warnings are overheated.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Tuesday that the report is \u201cnot based on facts\u201d and because the science behind climate modeling \u201cis never exact.\u201d
\u201cThe president\u2019s certainly leading on what matters most in this process, and that\u2019s on having clean air, clean water,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cIn fact, the United States continues to be a leader on that front.\u201d
Asked a day earlier about the devastating projections in his administration\u2019s report, the president dismissed them.
\u201cYeah, I don\u2019t believe it,\u201d Trump told reporters. \u201cI\u2019ve seen it, I\u2019ve read some of it, and it\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
