\nThe U. S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to review rulings that blocked states from cutting off public funding to Planned Parenthood \u2014 with freshman Justice Brett Kavanaugh siding with the court\u2019s liberals.
The justices left in place decisions by two lower courts that stopped Kansas and Louisiana from stripping Medicaid money from the reproductive health care organization.
The conservative Kavanaugh joined the court\u2019s four liberals in declining to consider the states\u2019 petitions \u2014 while Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch dissented.
The cases didn\u2019t involve funding for abortions, but Thomas suggested the \u201cpolitically fraught\u201d issue was the reason the majority of his colleagues declined to get involved.
\u201cSo what explains the Court\u2019s refusal to do its job here? I suspect it has something to do with the fact that some respondents in these cases are named \u2018Planned Parenthood,’\u201d he wrote
\u201cThat makes the Court\u2019s decision particularly troubling, as the question presented has nothing to do with abortion.\u201d
The dispute over funding for Planned Parenthood \u2014 the nation\u2019s largest abortion provider \u2014 stemmed from the 2015 release of a series of edited videos apparently depicting Planned Parenthood of America executives talking about profiting from the sale of fetal tissue.
Planned Parenthood has said it did not seek any payments for the tissue beyond reimbursement of costs.
