Steve Hewitt sticks with Kansas at No. 1 in his Top 25 baskeball poll.<\/b>
\nSometimes, you just have to trust your gut.
Two weeks ago, AP Top 25 voters faced a difficult decision. Gonzaga knocked off then-No. 1 Duke at the Maui Invitational, pretty much guaranteeing there would be a new No. 1 team. The only question was who it would be: Gonzaga or Kansas?
I went with Kansas. Gonzaga certainly had the best win of the season to date, but I preferred the Jayhawks\u2019 resume that included wins against Michigan State and Tennessee. The decision was nearly split: Gonzaga got 32 first-place votes to Kansas\u2019 31 and earned the No. 1 spot.
More voters jumped on the Gonzaga train last week, as the Bulldogs received 40 first-place votes to the Jayhawks\u2019 19. But I stuck with my gut with Kansas. In part, I wanted to wait to see how Gonzaga fared with upcoming tests against Tennessee and North Carolina before vaulting the Bulldogs to No. 1.
The faith in my gut paid off. On Sunday, Tennessee knocked off Gonzaga, making Kansas the new No. 1.
The Jayhawks certainly aren\u2019t without their imperfections. They have struggled at times, including in a narrow victory against New Mexico State last week, and an injury to Udoka Azubuike could cause them to trip up before conference play starts (they still have nonconference tests against Villanova and Arizona State remaining). But for now, they\u2019re No. 1.
My new top five is fairly straightforward. No. 1 is undefeated Kansas. No. 2 is Tennessee, whose only loss is a neutral-court overtime defeat to Kansas. No. 3 is Gonzaga, whose only loss is to Tennessee. No. 4 is Duke, whose only loss is to Gonzaga. And Michigan is No. ..
