Developer NetherRealm announced that it would be pulling the bloody fighting game from the lineup out of “solidarity with those who have spoken out against abuse.” Capcom also announced it would be taking Street Fighter 5 from the roster as well for the same reason.
This comes after multiple abuse allegations in the fighting game community. While the Smash and Skullgirls communities have been sharing their own stories, these withdrawals come right on the heels of misconduct allegations surrounding Joey “Mr. Wiz” Cuellar, the co-founder of the popular annual fighting game tournament, Evo. And even though Evo said it was putting Cuellar on administrative leave, NetherRealm and Capcom both decided to pull their respective games.
Some participants had also vowed to not enter in wake of the news. Dominique “SonicFox” McLean, known for their multiple titles in the Injustice and Mortal Kombat games and Dragon Ball FighterZ, said they were not going. Fighting game YouTuber Maximilian Dood also said he was not going to (virtually) attend.
It appears as though these are the only games to drop from the tournament. Soul Calibur 6, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r], Tekken 7, Samurai Shodown, Granblue Fantasy: Versus, Killer Instinct, Them’s Fighting Herds, and Skullgirls Encore are all still set to go at this time. However, it’s likely that others will bow out as the time goes on and the peer pressure builds. From a normal tournament to a strictly online one, it remains to be seen if the tournament will go on anymore at all if more of these games drop out.

Mortal Kombat 11 will no longer be at Evo 2020.
