In a statement sent to Heavy via email, the Jordison family representative said that Jordison \u201cpassed away peacefully in his sleep.\u201d Joey\u2019s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow. To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music. The representative declined to comment on the cause of death. Here\u2019s everything you need to know: In 1995, Jordison founded Slipknot with percussionist Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray in Des Moines, Iowa, according to Billboard. While accepting the Golden God award at the 2016 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards in London, Jordison revealed that he had been fighting a rare neurological disorder called transverse myelitis as Billboard reported. \u201cI lost my legs. I couldn\u2019t play anymore. It was a form of multiple sclerosis, which I don\u2019t wish on my worst enemy,\u201d Jordison said. According to the Mayo Clinic, transverse myelitis is when both sides of a section of the spinal chord has inflammation and often results in damage to the insulation of nerve cell fibers. This leads to messages travelling from the spinal chord to the body being interrupted, causing pain, muscle weakness, paralysis, sensory problems or bladder and bowel dysfunction. It is unknown if Jordison\u2019s condition is related to his death. \u201cI got myself back up, and I got myself in the gym, and I got myself back in fucking therapy to fucking beat this shit,\u201d Jordison said, detailing his road to recovery. \u201cAnd if I could do it, you could do it. It\u2019s the hardest thing I\u2019ve ever done in my life, more than fucking anything.\u201d According to the show\u2019s official site, recipients of the Golden God award are \u201cthe mightiest, most important names in our world \u2014 those that have come to define heavy music over the past 40 years.\u201d According to Billboard, past winners include Megadeth Co-founder Dave Mustaine and Mot\u00f6rhead Founder Lemmy Kilmister.
