\nA 55 old man has died after he was gored at a bull-running festival in eastern Spain, this weekend. He was repeatedly attacked by a bull at a festival in Onda. A wound to the man\u2019s left thigh perforated an artery and he died in hospital in the nearby town of Villarreal. Onda council cancelled all further bull running planned at the festival. A running of the bulls is an event that involves running in front of a small group of bulls, typically six but sometimes ten or more. Spanish tradition holds that bull-running began in northeastern Spain in the early 14th century. The rules require participants to be at least 18 years old, run in the same direction as the bulls, not incite the bulls, and not be under the influence of alcohol. The Pamplona bull run is the most popular in Spain and has been broadcast live by RTVE, the public Spanish national television channel, for over 30 years. The \u201eencierro\u201d begins with runners singing a benediction. It is sung three times, each time being sung both in Spanish and Basque. The benediction is a prayer given at a statue of Saint Fermin, patron of the festival and the city, to ask the saint\u2019s protection. Based on many tragic incidents that can occur, a 2020 survey by Electomania, a polling company, found 46% of Spaniards were in favour of banning bullfighting,34% were not in favour but did not back a legal ban, and 18% believed it should be preserved. Such festivals have already been banned in 100 Spanish towns. The region of Catalonia has already banned the activity after officials were presented with the signatures of 180,000 residents demanding an end to the activity. Animal rights group PETA has been vocal in abolishing the events.<\/p>\n
