\nMatthew McConaughey isn\u2019t running for governor of Texas. The True Detective star announced on Sunday that he would not be seeking the office after considering it in recent months. McConaughey posted a video to his Twitter and Instagram where he said of the process of running for governor a \u201chumbling and inspiring path to ponder\u2026 It is also a path that I\u2019m choosing not to take at this moment.\u201d The video comes before the candidate filing deadline for the Texas primary. Beto O\u2019Rourke, former El Paso congressman and presidential candidate, recently announced his run for governor against Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. In the video, McConaughey says, \u201cPoliticians? The good ones can help us get to where we need to go. Yeah, but let\u2019s be clear: They can\u2019t do anything for us unless we choose to do for ourselves.\u201d In October, McConaughey said on the New York Times NYT \u2019 Sway podcast that he was still learning more about the process of becoming and the position of governor. \u201cI like to measure things before I partake,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you\u2019ve got to partake before you\u2019ve partook.\u201d The How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actor drew attention recently for saying that he would be against mandating vaccines for young children citing that we need more information on the vaccine as well as saying, for his family, \u201cwe go slow on vaccinations, even before Covid.\u201d While McConaughey had not indicated if he would run as a democrat or republican, a poll by the University of Texas at Tyler and the Dallas Morning News showed that voters would be more likely to support McConaughey than O\u2019Rourke by almost 2-to-1. Abbott is also seeking a third term. He has been serving as the governor since 2014 and no Democrat has won a statewide election since 1994. McConaughey\u2019s announcement may be seen as a blessing for the O\u2019Rourke camp.<\/p>\n
