Despite this pervasive problem, audiences had high hopes for \u201cThe Matrix: Resurrections.\u201d The fourth installment of the franchise releases soon after 18 years since the last movie. Plus, \u201cThe Matrix\u201d has taken on a cult following with diehard fans eager for more content. But now that momentum may come to a screeching halt. Some early critic reviews for \u201cThe Matrix: Resurrections\u201d are quite terrible. Reviewers describe the fourth movie in the franchise as being, \u201canother truly horrible sequel.\u201d Even fan-favorite lead Keanu Reeves isn\u2019t enough to save this movie. The Daily Beast called \u201cResurrections,\u201d \u201csillier than Zuckerberg\u2019s Metaverse.\u201d Reviewer Nick Schager wrote, \u201c Devoid of its trademark style, action and depth, it\u2019s a pointless follow-up that falls back on cheeky self-referentiality in order to justify its existence.\u201d IGN reviewer Amelia Emberwing had a similar take. She wrote, \u201c\u2018 The Matrix Resurrections\u2019 is the kind of film that will go down in cult history because it is so laughably bad. The popular phrase \u201ctaking the red pill\u201d comes from \u201cThe Matrix,\u201d though the ultra-liberal Wachowskis balk at the insinuation that the movie has anything to do with defecting to conservatism. In a 2020 interview, co-creator Lilly Wachowski insisted that \u201cThe Matrix\u201d is actually \u201ca trans allegory.\u201d What was seen as edgy and original in 1999 is now a tired concept for fans and critics. It\u2019s worth noting that this film is Lana Wachowski\u2019s first solo effort at \u201cThe Matrix\u201d franchise. The original \u201cMatrix\u201d films had the Wachowski siblings working together. But not every reviewer has despised \u201cThe Matrix: Resurrections.\u201d As of now, the film\u2019s overall rating on Rotten Tomatoes stands at a decent 68%. Randy Myers of San Jose Mercury News said, \u201c\u2019Resurrections\u2019 can\u2019t compare to the original film, but it is a lot of fun.\u201d Meanwhile, David Sims of The Atlantic claimed the film had enough nostalgic elements to make it worthwhile.
