From flashbanging users to reports of slow performance, File Explorer got all the negative press in the last couple of weeks. Microsoft has fixed the bug that’s causing Windows 11’s File Explorer to flash a brief white screen in dark mode, the company hasn’t officially responded to its performance issue.
However, it’s not all bad news for File Explorer, as Microsoft has finally fixed a major UI issue that’s annoyed users ever since the release of Windows 10. While the issue still exists in Windows 10, Windows 11 with the latest update installed can finally experience a more consistent dark mode across File Explorer.
Windows 11’s File Explorer finally gets a dark mode overhaul

Dark mode isn’t new File Explorer. It’s as old as the Windows 10 October 2018 update, but users weren’t too happy with it because of what critics called a poor implementation of dark mode. The criticism grew even louder when Apple did a better job implementing dark mode throughout macOS.
Well, it looks like Microsoft has finally started to address the criticism. Last month, we reported that Windows 11’s Run dialogue and Folder options now respect the system-wide dark theme. And now, a month later, we now have another major dark mode-related improvement in Windows 11, and this time around, it’s about File Explorer progress dialogue.
Microsoft hasn’t officially documented it anywhere, but a famed Microsoft engineer on the Windows engineering team, Jennifer Gentleman, shared an image of a File Explorer progress bar with dark mode. In a reply to their own X post, the engineer also said that dark for File Explorer’s progress bar is currently rolling out.
What will you need to get a more consistent dark mode in Windows 11’s File Explorer?

If you’re running the December security patch (KB5072033) on your Windows 11 PC, you’re eligible to get the update. But since this is a gradual rollout, don’t expect to see the change immediately after installing the update. Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed it, all Windows 11 users with the latest December security update installed will likely get it by the end of this month.
It’s also worth noting that if you’ve installed the preview version of the December security patch (KB5070311), which rolled out on December 1, you will also see the dark mode in the progress bar. When the dark mode improvemments are available for your PC, in addition to the progress bar, now dialogues and the comfirmation prompts in File Explorer will also respect the system wide dark theme.

It won’t return again Windows 11’s File Explorer has been in the news in the last few days for all the wrong reasons.
