Last July, Puck News first reported that a sequel to the 2005 film The Devil Wears Prada was in the works, centering around today\u2019s \u201cchallenges facing print media,\u201d with Meryl Streep reprising her iconic role inspired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. However, details about the potential sequel were kept tight. until now.
On June 30, Disney\u2019s 20th Century Studios announced that The Devil Wears Prada 2 was officially in production, sharing a teaser video on Instagram filled with the first film\u2019s most memorable quotes. While the studio didn\u2019t reveal anything else, more details have emerged about the sequel\u2019s plot and which cast members will be returning over 20 years later.
The Devil Wears Prada is based on Lauren Weisberger\u2019s bestselling book that fictionalizes the author\u2019s time as Wintour\u2019s assistant at Vogue. It focuses on Anne Hathaway\u2019s character, Andrea \u201cAndy\u201d Sachs, a journalist who unexpectedly enters the world of high-fashion publishing by becoming Miranda\u2019s assistant.
The film was an immediate success, grossing over $326 million worldwide, earning two Oscar nominations (including a Best Actress nod for Streep), and spawning a West End stage musical adaptation that currently stars Vanessa Williams. As previously reported, Streep will return as Runway Editor-in-Chief Miranda Priestly, while Emily Blunt will reprise her role as her high-strung assistant Emily. It is now confirmed that Hathaway will return as Andy, and Stanley Tucci will step into the shoes of Runway Art Director Nigel once again.
On July 8, Variety confirmed that two more characters from the original film will also be returning. Tracie Thomas, who played Andy\u2019s best friend Lily, is set to reprise her role, while Tibor Feldman will once again play Irv Ravitz, the chairman of Runway\u2019s parent company, Elias-Clark.
The sequel will add a slew of both A-list and up-and-coming cast members. Kenneth Branagh will play Miranda\u2019s current husband, whose name is not yet known. On July 8, Deadline reported that Bridgerton star Simone Ashley will star in an undisclosed role.
Later that day, Variety confirmed that Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, The Office alum B.J. Novak, and The Sex Lives of College Girls star Pauline Chalamet had all joined the cast. Other notable cast additions include Broadway stars Conrad Ricamora and Helen J. Shen, as well as comedian Caleb Hearon.
On July 21, Entertainment Weekly announced that Colin From Accounts star Patrick Brammall is also joining the cast. A source told the outlet that his character will be \u201cthe new object of Andy\u2019s romantic affection.\u201d
One actor who will not be returning is Adrian Grenier, who played Andy\u2019s boyfriend, Nate, in the first film. Entertainment Weekly asked Gisele B\u00fcndchen if she would reprise her role as Runway staffer Serena, and one of her representatives simply responded with a sad, crying emoji, implying that she wouldn\u2019t be returning. When asked to expand, they eventually replied, \u201cI\u2019m not in a position to comment on that matter at this time.\u201d
While the cast is already stacked, more surprises might be in store. Sydney Sweeney was reportedly spotted on the New York set, with TMZ and Entertainment Tonight sharing footage of what appears to be the actor leaving her trailer. However, this could be a false alarm, as she was seen with the Euphoria cast in Los Angeles days prior. If that was indeed Sweeney on set, fans can likely expect some major cameos in the sequel.
A cameo that seems more guaranteed is none other than Lady Gaga. On Oct. 10, Variety reported that the singer is set to make an appearance in the sequel after she was spotted on the Milan set, in between shows on her Mayhem Ball Tour. However, no details about her role are yet known.
According to Variety, The Devil Wears Prada 2 will see Miranda nearing the end of her career amid a decline in print magazine sales. In an embarrassing twist, she must grovel to her former assistant, Emily, who now works as an executive at a luxury fashion conglomerate, in order to earn their advertising dollars.
On July 21, Hathaway did tease a tantalizing first look at her character\u2019s return on Instagram. \u201cAndy Sachs 2025,\u201d she captioned a photo of herself donning a sleek, striped vest and matching trousers.
On Nov. 12, 20th Century Studios dropped an early holiday gift: the first teaser trailer, which sees Miranda strut through the Runway offices \u2014 set to Madonna\u2019s \u201cVogue,\u201d naturally \u2014 and onto the elevator. Andy steps in as the doors close. \u201cMiranda,\u201d she says. \u201cTook you long enough,\u201d replies her erstwhile boss.
In addition to the tantalizing first look, the release date was revealed as May 1 \u2014 fittingly, days before the 2026 Met Gala. (\u201cA sequel? For spring? Groundbreaking,\u201d jokes the caption.)
On Feb. 1, the official trailer was unveiled, which finally confirms the sequel\u2019s plot. Andy has officially reunited with Miranda as Runway\u2019s new features editor, but in true Miranda fashion, she doesn\u2019t remember her at all. The ever-loyal Nigel still works at Runway, and the trio reunites with Emily, who now runs a luxury company, in hopes of getting her advertising dollars.
