Recently, it was touted that Samsung’s iris scanner in the Galaxy S8 could be defeated using a printout and a contact lens. Now, the firm has fired back, stating that the scenario is unrealistic.
It was a few days ago when we reported that the iris scanner on the Samsung Galaxy S8 a n d S8+ was defeated with a printout. Now, it appears that Samsung thinks it’s a scenario that is “hard to see happening in real life”.
The spokesperson goes on to explain, that in order to replicate the scenario shown in the video, you would need a camera that can shoot in infrared, which is no longer available on the market. Along with a clear image of the person’s iris, you’ll also still need to find a way to obtain their handset.
While all of the above is true, Chaos Computer Club (CCC) , the ones responsible for defeating the iris scanner, maintain that the iris scanner has vulnerabilities and that a traditional PIN would be, in comparison, a better option. However, Samsung has stuck by the iris scanner in its smartphones, stating that the technology is “one of the safest ways to keep your phone locked” and that a person’s iris patterns are “virtually impossible to replicate.”
